Aluminum is Down! (This means we have a floor)
The generator has been serviced, all the spot welding has been done. It was time to finally lay down the first level of the floor structure. We found some great aluminum at a trailer truck shop. It’s thicker than what was there before and more affordable. We got enough to do the entire floor and the cab-over. It is wider than the chassis so we are folding up the excess to give the base layers more stability and offer some additional protection from water. 1/4″ plywood is the first layer of wood. Next comes the insulation, 3/4″ plywood and our floor. At this point, I am fairly sure that we are just going to put in a wood floor and poly it. We will see as time progresses though.
I am going to stop talking and just post the pics. Here ya go.
The aluminum was not cut straight from the shop so Greg is over there cutting a straight edge.
Slow going but worth it.
The aluminum was clamped in place to the frame so the final cutting had to be done by hand with giant snips!
It’s all in the details.
The aluminum is tacked down by the cab and we are ready to roll out the rest of the roll.
We discovered that it’s not equally wide either. It got wider at the end. The guys both measured about 20 times because we couldn’t believe it but there ya go. Once we got it centered we cut off the excess in the back.
And the first layer of wood. This is 1/4″ plywood.
The last board needed to be trimmed to fit.
And there ya go. Daniel and Greg did a small groove on the aluminum following the frame line and folded the excess on the sides up.
And then we attached the original aluminum side frames. Our son helped. 🙂
You will notice the aluminum wall frames do not have the reinforcing we wanted nor the length. This was because we couldn’t afford to keep the rig at the welders any longer. As it was, they had the rig for a month because of the smoke from the fires and illness. Can’t help it – no-one to blame but we had to start construction.
The little guy is super excited and already visualizing where his space will be. 🙂
